Traveling with Allergies

Your trip has been planned down to the smallest detail and it is time to pack.

But what about your allergies? What should you do? You don’t want your allergies to spoil your vacation.

First – Be sure to take your medication your doctor has recommended with you. Take your doctor’s and pharmacy’s contact information with you in case you lose your medication.

Second – If you have dust mite allergies, what do you do?  Your mattress and pillows are probably covered with dust mite encasements at home.  There will probably be dust mites in the mattress you will be sleeping on.

Take dust mite covers with you. You can either buy a second set for travel or you can use the ones you have on your mattress and pillows. Wash them and pack them so they will be ready when you reach your destination.

Where ever you stay, put your mattress encasement on top of the sheets and sleep in the encasement like it was a sleeping bag.   Grab the pillow encasements and put them on the pillows. This will provide some protection from the dust mite allergens.  If you are sensitive to other detergents, this will help as well because you will be sleeping on something you have washed with your own detergent.   Just a hint – bring a brightly colored pillow case to put on the pillow as a reminder for you not to forget to take the encasements with you with you when you leave.

Third – Check with your physician’s office if you will miss allergy shots while on vacation. Depending on the length of your vacation, they may recommend adjusting your schedule or your dose.

Now go have fun.
